Legendary landscape photographer, mountaineer, and Bishop local Galen Rowell made a splash when his first assignment for National Geographic landed on the cover. His "dynamic landscapes" capture ephemeral wilderness moments—a flickering beam of light, a reflection, optical phenomena that evoke the ethereal. During his storied career, Rowell photographed mountains in Alaska, Antarctica, China, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Patagonia, Tanzania, Tibet, and beyond. But he wrote: "I’ve known all along that more of what I am seeking in the wilds is right here in my home state of California than anywhere else on earth." At Wayfinder Bishop, we couldn't agree more. We’re honored to showcase his vision of the Sierra Nevada right here in his hometown.
Beverly Schroeder has been fascinated by the photographic process for the past 50 years. Photography is her medium for honoring nature's beauty, which has inspired Beverly since childhood. She strives to understand and record the essence of a landscape, seascape, wild thing or historic place rather than simply capturing a pretty picture. Beverly’s photographs can be found in our Premium Guest Rooms.
Lance Stanislaw has been a master wood carver for more than 40 years, making his way from the Alpine slopes of Switzerland, through Lake Tahoe, and on to the high peaks of the Eastern Sierra. Based in Mammoth Lakes, Lance specializes in hand-carved scenes of local landscapes and wildlife. His artistry welcomes every guest to Wayfinder Bishop in our exquisitely crafted front desk.
After teaching mostly junior high school art for 26 years, Lynn Marit Peterson finally settled down to explore watercolor. Now a devotee to the medium, there is always a painting sitting before her. With an abundance of breathtaking landscape constantly changing in a never-ending parade of shapes, shades and shadows, Lynn is on inspirational overload. Lynn’s watercolors can be found in our breakfast buffet room in Whistling Trout.
Karma Henry is a Paiute/Italian/Portuguese artist who belongs to the Great Basin Native Artists (GBNA) group, which was created to provide more art exposure to smaller native communities. Karma’s current body of work is related to place, experience, and pattern. Reflections of simple forms and shapes--basketry designs, natural materials, architectural elements and geometrical forms--have become overlays for landscape imagery. Karma Henry’s artwork can be found in our Guest Rooms.
Courtney Bagby resides in Big Pine, CA and works in many mediums including oil painting, block printing, digital design, and crafting. In her work, Courtney tries to capture the beauty, mystery, and calmness of nature and animals. As a young child, Courtney was always fascinated and intrigued by animals and their actions and behaviors. She paints from that point of view and wants to capture a very joyous and peaceful feeling that the animals have given her.
